Sludge oil disposal

Wednesday, January 23, 2008   By: Catracho [104] 1 Stars
Hello everybody:

In our facility, we operate a small boiler of 400 BHP burning heavy fuel oil (Bunker C). For several reasons we desire to switcth on the fuel, changing from heavy fuel oil to sludge of that heavy fuel oil. The sludge is the product of the teatment of this heavy fuel oil by centrifugal separators.

Can someone of the Forum give me a web site, a company name or a technical paper in order to proceed to ascertain if our idea can come true?

Thanks in advance.

I have no web sites or technical papers but I have worked with bunker oil. I would be willing to bet this is a bright idea from someone who won't have to actually work with the stuff. Basically it's a bad idea. The sludge is goint to be very dirty. It will need to be heavily filtered which will probably not leave you with much fuel. It will wear out very expensive burner tips very quickly. It will create a lot of smoke. It will wear out burner pumps It will wash out control valves and isolating valves. It will require more atomizing steam and more steam for the fuel oil heaters to make it work. Bunker oil is basically road tar as it is. Why would any-one want to complicate their lives that much that they would try burning sludge from this oil?

Hello everybody:

Thanks Glencannon for your reply.

All this story takes place on a power plant with Diesel engines. The paramount reason to try to do this conversion is that, daily our fuel treatment plant produce a lot of sludge.

So far, we have been simply paying somebody to take the stuff away but, it has turn out very expensive. To think in a small plant to recover some fuel from this sludge is to talk about a lot of money as well. That is why we are thinking about this possible solution.

Thanks again.

A FCB Boiler/Furnace will burn the sluge you are describing. You cannot burn the sludge (treated) unless it is in a kiln safely unless a Fludiized Combusiton Bed furnace/boiler is used.

High Sulfite Residual
By: Ross. [390]

First, I want to say that large amounts of Sodium Sulfite NaSO3 becomes a contaminate because it will produce foaming and other problems, but foaming is the primary problem.

Your 500-psi Water Tube Boiler is seems to have reasonable level of residual Sodium Sulfite NaSO3 remaining in the boiler water. Nice pH too.

Your 300-psi Waste Heat Recovery Boiler has twice what I would expect for Sodium Sulfite NaSO3 at ranging 80-ppm to 100-ppm. pH is good so you are getting a good yield.
