Steel plate for boiler shells and drums: SA 515 or SA-516

Wednesday, June 08, 2011   By: thangvbc [1235] 1 Stars
Hello everybody,

Can you tell me what is difference between ASTM SA 515 and SA 516 steel plate when using for boiler shells and drums. Boiler is common industrial one fire-tube and water-tube, generating saturated steam up to 25 barg.

Can we use SA 516 Gr 60, Gr 70 for drum fabrication. Since SA-516 is Pressure Vessel Plates, Carbon Steel, for Moderate- and Lower-Temperature Service, while SA-515 is Pressure Vessel Plates, Carbon Steel, for Intermediate- and Higher-Temperature Service.

What does Intermediate- and Higher-Temperature Service and Moderate- and Lower-Temperature Service mean?

Thank you

Dear Sir:

You may find help, if no other available, in the Rules of American Bureau of Shipping or Nippon Kaiji Kyookai, both are very similar. ABS are available at internet, mayhaps NKK also, this I have not checked.

In NKK, of which I have a bound copy, in Part K - Chapter 3 - materials, you may find tables with steels for pressure vessels, and in part D chapter 9, there is a table with allowable stress levels depending on steel temperature. The nomenclature is different, that is they do not mention SA---, but with the chemical composition and mechanical properties an equivalence may be readily found.

Good luck

Mechanical properties are same for both materials. Both can be used in pressure vessel and boiler. SA515 is having coarse grain structure and SA516 is having fine grain structure. SA515 will have higher carbon content than SA516. Lower carbon content means higher weldable quality. Go through V notch and heat treatments to get more idea.

Thank you very much.

In addition, can you tell me the meanings of Moderate- and Lower-Temperature Service and Intermediate- and Higher-Temperature Service. I used to thing: Higher - temperature service means Heat resistant and only SA-515 can be used for boiler.

High Sulfite Residual
By: Ross. [390]

First, I want to say that large amounts of Sodium Sulfite NaSO3 becomes a contaminate because it will produce foaming and other problems, but foaming is the primary problem.

Your 500-psi Water Tube Boiler is seems to have reasonable level of residual Sodium Sulfite NaSO3 remaining in the boiler water. Nice pH too.

Your 300-psi Waste Heat Recovery Boiler has twice what I would expect for Sodium Sulfite NaSO3 at ranging 80-ppm to 100-ppm. pH is good so you are getting a good yield.
