Boiler water hardness

Friday, December 16, 2016   By: Mike w [2009] 0 Stars
I am new to the world of boilers. Getting straight to the issue, my boiler water test shows hardness. However my water softener, feed water and condensate do not show hardness at all. Any make up water goes through our water softener. We treat our steam boiler with Nalco products. The boiler is a Bryan flexible tube boiler and it is hooked to the same manifold with 2 other boilers of the same make and size. Also after cleaning and verifying the conductivity probes were working properly I noticed a significant jump in the conductivity. It went from 2000 ppm to 4500 and 5000 ppm. Any suggestions on the hard water in the boiler?

Mr. Mike W.:

I hope not to make things more complicated, but I recall having read of this same problem in this forum, please search back in last or former years. I do not know your boiler or the commercial products that you use.

I can only suggest, if the problem is not a permanent one, I would first check, based on records, on the origin and quality of water fed to the boiler prior to detecting the transitory increase in solids, and if it is a permanent one, maybe you are treating adequately the make-up water, as you say, but there is a chance that the condensate be contaminated by some mixing with cooling water, but please do not pay any attention if you, as the plant operator, have already first checked this out.

More experienced forumers, as Mr Watts or Mr. Burns, will surely soon give you better suggestions.

You have a very serious question and serious plant problem is possible.
You have not indicated enough detail to diagnose your problem.
The most likely problem is a condenser leak but you do not say if one boiler is the problem or all of them.
Blowdown being shut off could be an answer
Reagent or chemical dosing or the wrong chemicals could be the answer
Is the problem stable or improving or worsening.
As these problems can be very serious you need to have Nalco check urgently.

superheated steam ideal gas
By: cmolanes@itba.edu.ar [50]

Mr. Pradeep:

Steam behaves well as an ideal gas if not too close to the saturation line if you place yourself on a Mollier chart, when the temperature and enthalpy lines coincide and are straight, horizontal lines, then it behaves as ideal, and this you can easily see on the chart.

I would rely though most on the steam values given by the chart or steam tables, because they are confident independently of the region , e.g. they stand both for ideal and real gas, but the ideal gas equation ....   Read All
