Power generated by steam at 10 barA pressure!

Friday, March 03, 2017   By: P I [1983] 3 Stars
I want to know whats the best steam turbine can achieve from steam flow @ 1 kg/sec at 10 barA pressure and 300°C temperature. I know well that 1 kg/sec flow is low, but its just a hypothetical question to understand how much can be achieved from steam flow for some specific flow rate.

This is quite easy to estimate, I believe. Your consideration of a unit mass flow is sensible, since you may then expand to whatever actual flow you are envisaging.

With the steam conditions, both input and expected outflow whether condenser or counterpressure and considering an estimated turbine efficiency, the calculations are basic thermodynamics and quite simple. As for the efficiency, you may rely on information of manufacturers or, if not available, as your plant is not a large one, judging on your steam conditions, you may adopt some 0,70 to 0,75% efficiency, and some 97 - 98% mechanical efficiency to calculate SHP.

Thanks for the reply. Kindly tell me whether I will consider the whole enthalpy of the steam or just the latent heat of vaporisation while counting the output.

It is the enthalpy drop, or enthalpy variation, between the steam conditions at inlet and outlet of the turbine, that is basic Thermodynamics.

You may find solved examples in any book on the subject. I suggest Moran and Schapiro, or Hwang, both are quite well known.

superheated steam ideal gas
By: cmolanes@itba.edu.ar [50]

Mr. Pradeep:

Steam behaves well as an ideal gas if not too close to the saturation line if you place yourself on a Mollier chart, when the temperature and enthalpy lines coincide and are straight, horizontal lines, then it behaves as ideal, and this you can easily see on the chart.

I would rely though most on the steam values given by the chart or steam tables, because they are confident independently of the region , e.g. they stand both for ideal and real gas, but the ideal gas equation ....   Read All
