Sea planes commonly have engines mounted in the wing high above the fuselage. Keeps the props out of the water.

But all that weight that high hinders stability, making it real tippy on the water, which requires pontoons out on the wing tips, which are fragile and drag. Would steam turbines be much lighter than aircraft engines? then the boiler could be in the bilge, same as is done in ships.

Long ago when the nrc was the atomic energy commission a converted ww2 bomber was fitted with miniature atomic reactor with steam turbines for propulsion in conjunction with the normal turbocharged combustion engines as a backup. The outcome was the additional weight to lift was impracticable.

Thanx for prompt feedback.
I read an Oak Ridge report on a LFTR powered plane, and seen some, perhaps dubious on a Russian version.

Both plagued with the radiation shielding problem. However, if the plane is jumbo, big enuf, rather than using shielding have the reactor 100 meters away in a tail. No CO2, no chem trails.

Similarly, ships find steam turbine practical when the scale is large enuf. Havta be a sea plane like the Spruce goose cause nobody wants a nuke at a crowded airport. But in the same high power range, say 25,000 kw. how does the steam turbine weight compare?

So far, no one has yet developed an engine lighter, at similar outputs, than the gas turbine, though at the expense of having it working on an open cycle, and that is why it has been widely adopted as propulsion devices onboard many warships frigates, destroyers and cruisers except when nuclear, airships and fast ferries.

Nuclear powering is considered mainly on an endurance or strategic basis, though international pressure banned it onboard commercial ships Savannah and other cases being typical.

Steam plants will have a drawback in the weight of the condenser, not only the boiler...

On water-borne planes, like the old Martin Mariners, Catalinas and several others, you will still have to rely, in my opinion, either to gas turbines or high speed diesel engines on the wings, and if you are thinking of a small plane, then perhaps an engine on top of the fuselage will do, but please read about operational problems in some small aircraft carried on board warships in the pre-radar period, when trying to land in relatively rough weather, and we might be speaking of sea states 3 or 4, to say something.

Consider a 1 to 5 weight ratio where for small combustion turbine or jet engine to an equivalent steam turbine. So an example is 3MW Gas Turbine weighs about 3 tons to a 3MW Steam Turbine that weigh about 15 tons. Steam turbine rotor weight is about 2 ton and the upper cover is maybe about 5 ton with the bottom casing and fittings and trim about 8 ton, but this does not include generator, foundation, auxiliaries or air cooled condenser for your application let alone steam boiler.

Is Cp/Cv applicable to steam to calculate?

The reason that isobaric Cp heat capacity is greater than isometric Cv is that isobaric involves expansion. Remember our atmosphere has mass, so in order for a system to expand it must displace that mass. And this requires work. So Cp requires work plus the energy to heat the gas , while Cv only requires the energy to heat.

So for all gases and/or steam the work required to expand a given volume is the same that being the work required to displace our atmosphere by a given volume.
