Will a generator trip due to low hydrogen purity or low hydrogen pressure?

Well the clean answer is no there is no generator interlock or trip on any H2 or hydrogen unusual condition for hydrogen like low hydrogen purity or low hydrogen pressure. Some times they can be alarmed but the small the less likely. Although nothing would surprise me for some where out there there may be a generator with a interlock.

As another point, hydrogen purity alarms are not in general found on 100MW or less for hydrogen cooled ac generators. They should be a display in the control room.

Low purity of hydrogen in the ac generator is a matter of windage losses and of course lower efficiency or poor money savings. At about 98 percent is when this problems starts, so purity at 99 percent is best. Of course when the hydrogen purity decreases below 74 percent then conditions for a hydrogen explosion will occur should an ignition source expose itself.

There is a leakage rate for hydrogen and the acceptable rate of leakage is best referred to the manufacturer of the as generator. For large ac generators you can expect a leakage rate of hydrogen at no greater than about 500 cubic feet per day.

Hydrogen purity alarms are required on hydrogen cooled generators of any size, however it is true generators less than 100 MW will rarely be hydrogen cooled.

Thanks for catching that, what I thinking but did not write down was they were much older machines from as far back as the 1950s of less than 100MW above 30MW as I recall that were hydrogen cooled and would be alarmed locally in a free standing cabinet on the turbine generator deck or near the bottles of hydrogen under the generator but not always in control room, but I cant validate that 100% now. They were GE as I remember. It has been a long time since seeing those ac generators. Most of my AC Generator were not hydrogen cooled as you said.

Is Cp/Cv applicable to steam to calculate?
By: Kent mayhew [2161]

The reason that isobaric Cp heat capacity is greater than isometric Cv is that isobaric involves expansion. Remember our atmosphere has mass, so in order for a system to expand it must displace that mass. And this requires work. So Cp requires work plus the energy to heat the gas , while Cv only requires the energy to heat.

So for all gases and/or steam the work required to expand a given volume is the same that being the work required to displace our atmosphere by a given volume.
