Could someone explain a wet condenser.i never heard this term before. We have a surface condenser at a large coal fired plant.I have also seen air cooled condensers but the wet condenser is new to me.than you.

Mr. John:

I confess I have not, either. I can imagine it might be termed thus a piece of equipment in which steam jets condense whilst mixing with water as in deaerators, but then this would be a rather small heat exchanger, at least, small steam mass flow being required. Another idea the name suggests to me is a classical surface condenser working in abnormal conditions, with the condensate well being overflooded, but both are pure imagination. Hope someone will be able to explain better.

I have not heard the phrase wet condenser either, but suspect you maybe referring to a Jet Condenser were the steam condensate that is condensing from the steam turbine hood is in direct contact with the condenser cooling water. So it is an open heat exchanger.

The Jet Condenser does not pull a strong or deep vacuum like a surface condenser and a Jet Condenser does not recover condensate like a surface condenser and are coupled to a set of cooling towers.

Also, Barometric Condensers are Jet Condensers. The difference between a straight forward Jet Condenser is it is under the steam turbine exhaust hood and a Barometric Condenser is located above the turbine hall floor and outside.

This term is mainly used in design. The cooling of condensers is Once through as in sea water or river etc, Or recirculating by Cooling tower or Air Cooled exchanger. The recirculating is therefore either wet or dry.

The turbine condenser does not see any difference other than temperatures

How obvious. Dry is air and Wet is water. Ugh!

It does sound obvious but some schemes are hybrid air cooling with a trim cooling from a Cooling tower and in the end you just want to know can it be used without a water makup. If its wet it cant.

Is Cp/Cv applicable to steam to calculate?
By: Kent mayhew [2161]

The reason that isobaric Cp heat capacity is greater than isometric Cv is that isobaric involves expansion. Remember our atmosphere has mass, so in order for a system to expand it must displace that mass. And this requires work. So Cp requires work plus the energy to heat the gas , while Cv only requires the energy to heat.

So for all gases and/or steam the work required to expand a given volume is the same that being the work required to displace our atmosphere by a given volume.
