What would be some safety protections for a hrsg in the gas turbine logic?

Hi John,

Good question, concerning safety protection for a HRSG or Heat Recovery Steam Generator from the combustion turbine or gas turbine. Also, safety protection logic is based on an over simplification of cause and effect such as the combustion turbine causes unwanted heat rates in the ducting that is connected to the HRSG that effects damage to the tubing or components in the HRSG.

I would look at this safety protection from the very expensive gas turbine perspective. The HRSG can be repaired or replaced at a fraction of the cost of the gas turbine. I do not think it can be overstated that the gas turbine mass flow and heat rates should be reasonably stabilized as much as possible or try to minimize the operational swings.

Whether the combustion turbine generator with a connected HRSG is a 1x1 or 2x1 the safety protection to the gas turbine and HRSG is the by-pass exhaust with diverter valve. But, older units may not have this nice feature but they can be retrofitted. What is nice about by-passing the HRSG is the gas turbine can operate as a simple cycle while the Rankin Cycle components like the HRSG are down for repairs or maintenance.

So, should the HRSG not be able to safely absorb the heat rate from the gas turbine exhaust for whatever the reason then the three-way diverter valve, which has a programmable opening rate, which is just a large sheet of steel in the connector duct, that diverts the gas turbines hot exhaust gases over 1000F to the attached steel stack, which is also short in height.

So, the safety protection logic is to protect the gas turbine and HRSG where the logic controls the three-way diverter valve in the by-pass system. I do not know if I answered your question the way you wanted it answered, but maybe it will help others too.

I wanted to say sudden operational swings that encroach on the safety margins can cause damage to the compressor or hot section like the combustors. When the momentum of the air flow is stopped momentarily we are in for trouble. These are air breathing dragons that do not need burps or coughing.

superheated steam ideal gas
By: cmolanes@itba.edu.ar [50]

Mr. Pradeep:

Steam behaves well as an ideal gas if not too close to the saturation line if you place yourself on a Mollier chart, when the temperature and enthalpy lines coincide and are straight, horizontal lines, then it behaves as ideal, and this you can easily see on the chart.

I would rely though most on the steam values given by the chart or steam tables, because they are confident independently of the region , e.g. they stand both for ideal and real gas, but the ideal gas equation ....   Read All
