Turbine Metal Inner and Outer Thermocouples

Wednesday, June 28, 2017   By: Ahsan [2077] 1 Stars
Hi every one
What is the benefit of providing two thermocouples one at Inner and other at outer point for first stage steam turbine metal temperature.
What can be the possible reason of increased temperature difference between inner and outer points?

From my old time perspective, the turbine inner high press casing and outer casing are separate components. The inner casing is directly related to the rotor, steam components, and bearings, but expansion is accomplished by the flexibility of the front standard.

Where the outer casing is directly related to the STG foundation for anchoring. I like to think of the high press inner casing as floating inside the outer casing. I know it is a bit over simplified, but descriptive.

So, the temperature measuring devices on both casings measures temperature related expansion and they must expand differently otherwise, they will simply jam up.

If you consider the thickness of the inner casing it is like any metal including boiler steam water drums. If the metal on one side is heated that side will expand and if the other side does not expand the metal will tear apart by cracking.
A steam turbine starting up has hot steam on the rotor side of the casing and will begin to expand. The outer side of the casing must warm up fast enough to prevent cracking.
So that the stress on the casing can be monitored and the startup rate kept low enough the inner to outlet metal temperature must be known.
The problem is not the difference between the inner and outer casing, it is the difference between the two sides of the inner casing.

Thanks for furthering the explanation, I didnt read the question right either, for I thought there was a thermocouple on the outer and inner casing. Reading your explanation clears up the question. Again, thanks.

Is Cp/Cv applicable to steam to calculate?
By: Kent mayhew [2161]

The reason that isobaric Cp heat capacity is greater than isometric Cv is that isobaric involves expansion. Remember our atmosphere has mass, so in order for a system to expand it must displace that mass. And this requires work. So Cp requires work plus the energy to heat the gas , while Cv only requires the energy to heat.

So for all gases and/or steam the work required to expand a given volume is the same that being the work required to displace our atmosphere by a given volume.
