Water treatment in closed loop

Thursday, January 25, 2018   By: Basem Belal 2 Stars
Dear all,
I am facing a problem in the cooling system of turbo generator group, kind of water is soft water with small ratio of alkalizer soda caustic PH of this water is 8.5.
we add chemical to the closed loop Nitrite base to have at least 150ppm nitrite, then PH go to 9.
day by day PH increased to reach 9.55 , so I decide to decrease PH by renew the water because or closed system is from carbon steel and copper, for last one PH recommended is to be not more than 9.
when I started renew the water but PH still high and fixed, them I decide to add demineralized water then I get opposite result and PH increased each time we renew the water up to 10.2.
analysis of nitrite increase from 130ppm to 200 ppm without any adding from it.

please any explanation of the matter?

Your system is very unstable and it appears to me one cause is poor mixing of additives with the main circulation causing time delays in seeing the full response. The other is your frequent changing of the water which exposes the first problem to repeated occurrence
I also have my doubts you have the correct target for nitrite as more than 300 ppm is the minimum I would expect and 700ppm is not too high.
A low target and frequent addition of O2 in water addition is likely to cause corrosion and pitting.
You should also watch out for bacterial problems which consume nitrite .

many thanks Mr. Jim,
agree with you our system seems unstable, but we work from few years ago on it, it was stable and there was no problem and the same additive, its procedure...
chemical supplier advise me to think about bacteria and to add some biocide, I did but also still same result.
normally it is difficult to get good additive mixing in closed loop system, for this all specialist in the field recommend to wait many hours of circulation before taking any analysis.
volume of our closed is 9000 liter, circulation pump is 3500L/min, good mixing will occur.
my chemical supplier recommended me to increase additive to 400 ppm, PH 12 , he said if you have corrosion inhibitor for carbon steel and for copper dont worry.

many thanks

It sounds like you will be OK.
Regarding mixing it is often the case that dosing is to a head tank which is not in the circulation system and a vent should be left open back to the head tank with a water flow to flush the dosed chemicals in. If the vent has been shut there will be long time delays to mix by expansion flows in and out of the head tank.

High Sulfite Residual
By: Ross. [390]

First, I want to say that large amounts of Sodium Sulfite NaSO3 becomes a contaminate because it will produce foaming and other problems, but foaming is the primary problem.

Your 500-psi Water Tube Boiler is seems to have reasonable level of residual Sodium Sulfite NaSO3 remaining in the boiler water. Nice pH too.

Your 300-psi Waste Heat Recovery Boiler has twice what I would expect for Sodium Sulfite NaSO3 at ranging 80-ppm to 100-ppm. pH is good so you are getting a good yield.
