Steam blowing

Monday, March 12, 2018   By: Senguts [2245] 0 Stars
This is for a new project undergoing construction. We have a steam line of 6 inches size for spent caustic treatment . The steam pressure is around 50 barg at 425 deg c. We have welded ball valves in this steam line as per design.

We are in the process of fabricating the steam line and the next activity would be of steam blowing.

For steam blowing we normally remove all the valves and provide spacers. But in this case, being welded valves as per design, how such steam blowing operations are performed..Are there any other alternatives instead of steam blowing to ensure that there are no weld slags ..

For your information this steam is required for heating the spent caustic in a heat exchanger and there are no turbines in the downstream. After exchanging the heat and pressure reduction the low pressure steam gets connected back to the low pressure steam header.

Thanks to advise.

I dont believe there is an alternative to steam blowing any high pressure steam line when it is being asked by the owner. Your 6 inch steam line is going to operate at 50barg or about 725psi with a superheat of 226c or 439F above 725psi saturated steam, so it seem like an important usage of steam power for the heat exhanger. I would think a short steam blow will suffice to remove what is loose or near loose. But I dont see how a steam blow on your application is going to bear any fruit beyond a 5-minute blow. I also dont see how a target will benefit you either, but a muffler might while still having the desired steam flow to remove debris. You are on the site and have a better appreciation for the conditions.

Thank you Murphy. We can do steam blowing..But my worry is the possible impact on the trim components of the welded valves as these cannot be removed during steam blowing..Do you envisage such problems?

I would like to say that I cant imagine a valves trim having an issue when valves are sized and classed right for the service, temperature and pressure rating. Of couse the valves need to be sufficiently maintained by qualified workers.

Cannot for see a problem with the valving during steam blow.

Mr. Ross has expressed the qualifying points well which I think you have already considered.

superheated steam ideal gas
By: cmolanes@itba.edu.ar [50]

Mr. Pradeep:

Steam behaves well as an ideal gas if not too close to the saturation line if you place yourself on a Mollier chart, when the temperature and enthalpy lines coincide and are straight, horizontal lines, then it behaves as ideal, and this you can easily see on the chart.

I would rely though most on the steam values given by the chart or steam tables, because they are confident independently of the region , e.g. they stand both for ideal and real gas, but the ideal gas equation ....   Read All
